Does Ariel Sharon’s Death Bode the Second Coming?
Does a note left by a venerated Orthodox Rabbi shortly before his death indicate that the Apocalypse and the ’1000 years of peace’ are just around the corner?
Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri died in Israel in 2006 at the age of 108. At his funeral 24 hours later it is estimated that 2 or 3 hundred-thousand people flooded the streets of Jerusalem to pay tribute to the “mystic sage.”
On Sept 24th 2001, he prophesied that “On Hashanah Rabba the actual war of Gog and Magog will commence and last for some 7 years.” Auspiciously, on the eve of Hashanah Rabba on Oct 7th 2001, the United States began strikes against Al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan. A year later during Rosh Hashanah in October 2005, he raised his head after a a period of deep concentration and declared, “The soul of the Messiah has attached itself to a person in Israel” and he would honor his promise to guide his people through a “time of trouble.” In his last prophesy before death, he declared that he had met the Messiah, and he will come shortly after the death of Ariel Sharon.
Rabbi Kaduri wrote a note while dying and requested that it be opened and read a year after his death. On January 28, 2007, the note in Hebrew was opened and read, but proved to be confusing to many of the Rabbi’s followers:
Concerning the letter abbreviation of the Messiah’s name, He will lift the people and prove that his word and law are valid. This I have signed in the month of mercy,
Yitzhak Kaduri
“Yarim Ha’Am Veyokhiakh Shedvaro Vetorato Omdim” is the phonetic pronunciation of the Hebrew phrase in bold. The initials of this phrase spell “Yehoshua,” which is another way of spelling the name Jesus. The members of Kaduri’s Ultra-Orthodox semniary, Nahalat Yitzhak Yeshiva, scrambled to explain that the Rabbi had not left the exact instructions for decoding the message. Among the deflated comments appearing on web forums were “So Rabbi Kaduri was a Christian?” and “The Christians are dancing and celebrating.”
The note received scant coverage in Israeli news, with a few sources insisting the note’s authenticity, but others decrying the note as a forgery. Two of Kaduri’s followers interviewed by Israel Today attested that the note was authentic, but they had “no idea how the Rabbi got this name of the Messiah.”
Kaduri’s son, Rabbi David Kaduri asserts the note’s inauthenticity, claiming that in September 2005 when the note was written, his father’s physical condition made it impossible for him to write. David Kaduri did however also confirm that in his last year, his father had talked and dreamed almost exclusively about the Messiah and his coming. “My father has met the Messiah in a vision,” he said, “and told us that he would come soon.”

Government Explained.
An inquisitive alien visits the planet to check on our progress as a species, and gets into a conversation with the first person he meets. The alien discovers that we live under the rule of a thing called "government", and wants to understand more about what "government" is, what it does, and why it exists.
Police flee from 'goblin' in a suitcase.
A bizarre case of mass hysteria is reported to have caused police in Zimbabwe to flee in terror.
The peculiar incident was alleged to have taken place at the Tshabalala Police Station on Wednesday evening. According to reports, a family from a local suburb left a suitcase at the station containing a "goblin" in a blood-filled bottle.
"We heard some screaming from the charge office and most officers who had knocked off rushed to see what was happening," said one officer. "At first everyone gathered around the suitcase, wanting to see what was inside."
What happened next isn't clear, but several of the officers reportedly fled the building in terror after the "goblin" jumped out of the bottle and ran amok until a healer was said to have overpowered it and destroyed it with fire.
"One minute, the charge office was full, the next, it was empty," said the officer. "I think some people went out through the windows because we could not all have fitted through the door."
Most likely a case of mass hysteria sparked by an animal taxidermy or other ritualistic object that happened to be in the suitcase, the incident nonetheless emphasizes the extent to which spiritual beliefs and superstitions dominate the lives of those who live in the region.

Orion's life-support module prepares for launch.
Rockets get all the glory, but this unthrilling structure could be keeping astronauts alive in a few years' time. It is the service module for NASA's forthcoming deep-space capsule, Orion, which is being groomed to ferry astronauts to the moon, asteroids and perhaps even Mars.
Anyone who remembers the terrifying Apollo 13 disaster, en route to the moon in April 1970, will recall how vitally important the service module is. Wiring insulation inside a liquid oxygen tank on the Apollo 13 service module failed, leading to an explosion that crippled the spacecraft and left the crew capsule to be pushed back to Earth by the lunar lander. Luckily, thanks to some heroic improvisation, all on board survived.
Service modules are tricky things to build because the absolute essentials of life – water and air – have to sit beside volatile thruster propellants and hot electronics. There is nowhere else they can be placed: the conical shroud at the bottom of the service module connects to the top of the rocket – which is discarded once its job is done – and the crew capsule sits on top of the service module.
This particular module won't carry all of its life-support kit when it flies a 4-hour, uncrewed orbital test flight in September. But future Orions will travel to the moon in 2017, unscrewed, followed by a crewed mission in 2021. Experiences on those trips will give NASA an idea of its suitability for a Mars mission.
The Orion service module is a co-production between NASA and the European Space Agency – a first for the space-flight industry. It is based on the ATV, an uncrewed, disposable cargo craft that ESA uses to supply the International Space Station.
If you like large things that go "bang", take a look at this successful test of the rocket panels. These will protect the service module from acoustic vibration, heat and wind as it powers through the densest, most damaging part of the atmosphere.

Baltic Sea Anomaly – Is it Metal? Is It a UFO?
The circle is at least 14,000 years old
Here is a news update on the Baltic Sea UFO/Anomaly. I am afraid we end up with many more fascinating questions then we get answers but none the less this is still a great story with many unresolved answers. This was published in the Swedish Newspaper Expressen on May 24, 2013.
The circle in the Baltic Sea continues to perplex.
New test results from Israel shows that a part of the circle is metallic – and researchers there think it is a metal that nature itself can not manufacture.
Swedish researchers say the opposite.
- It can be created in nature, but it has different conditions in different waters, says geologist Fredrik Klingberg.
In June 2011, the divers Dennis Åsberg and Peter Lindberg, a mysterious discovery on the Baltic seabed. Ocean X team found a circle with a diameter of 60 meters almost 90 meters into the sea. Previous test results from Tel Aviv has shown that there have been burnt organic material on the circle.
Now, the new test results from another part of the circle. Result from Israel shows that the bit is metallic and contains limonite and goethite.
Professor Dr. Steve Weiner of Israel says to the divers that there is a metal that not nature can produce itself.
- I do not know what to believe anymore. The response from Tel Aviv, the object that we found a metal that is designed, makes you get goose bumps, says diver Dennis Åsberg.
“It is not at all surprising”
Swedish scientists have a different view.
- Limonite and goethite close to hand with the BOG-IRON ORE. For me, this could be nodules, they are in many seabeds, says Fredrik Klingberg, a geologist at the Geological Survey of Sweden.
Martin Jakobsson, marine geologist at Stockholm University:
- It is not at all surprising that you found those subjects, nature can produce it itself, he says

The divers also found the stones of granite lying on top of the object and received information that indicates that the object has been there for 14 000 years.
- Then it could be done by people in the past. Before the Ice Age low was a lake where the Baltic is now and the subject is on the coastal strip, said Dennis Åsberg.
Martin Jakobsson think this sounds reasonable.
- I have said it before and are still clinging to it – it seems to be a geological objects that had lain there for long.

Ambiguities about the mysterious circle makes scientists skeptical.
- I am very skeptical about the whole thing, so difficult, it should not be that hard to find out what it really is. One can make such documentation at that depth, says Johan Rönnby, professor of maritime archeology at Södertörn University.

Would love to receive help
Dennis Åsberg agree that it is mysterious – but says he’s happy to receive help to find out what it is.

Babylonian tablet shows how Noah's ark could have been constructed.
British Museum expert says 3,700-year-old instructions describe how to build round boat – but he does not believe ark existed.
Noah's ark was never built, still less crash landed on Mount Ararat, a British Museum expert has declared – despite holding in his hand 3,700-year-old instructions on exactly how to construct one.
Noah's ark was never built, still less crash landed on Mount Ararat, a British Museum expert has declared – despite holding in his hand 3,700-year-old instructions on exactly how to construct one.
"I am 107% convinced the ark never existed," Irving Finkel said. His discoveries, since a member of the public brought a battered clay tablet with 60 lines of neat cuneiform text to Finkel – one of the few people in the world who could read them – are outlined in a new book, The Ark Before Noah.
While every child's toy and biblical illustration – and the latest film version, due for release later this month and starring Russell Crowe as Noah – shows a big pointy-ended wooden boat, the Babylonian tablet gives what Finkel is convinced is the original version of the story.
The ark is a huge circular coracle, 3,600 square metres in dimension or two-thirds the size of a football pitch, made like a giant rope basket strengthened with wooden ribs, and waterproofed with bitumen inside and out. This was a giant version of a craft which the Babylonians knew very well, Finkel pointed out, in daily use up to the late 20th century to transport people and animals across rivers.
Its people-and-animal-carrying abilities will soon be put to the test: the production company Blink is making a Channel 4 documentary based on his research, including building a circular ark.
The tablet gives a version of the ark story far older than the biblical accounts, and Finkel believes the explanation of how "holy writ appears on this piece of Weetabix", is that the writers of the Bible drew on ancient accounts encountered by Hebrew scholars during the Babylonian exile.
Texts about a great flood and the order by God to the one just man to build a boat and save himself, his family, and all the animals, clearly older than the Bible story, were first found in the Middle East in the 19th century. They caused both consternation and wild excitement, including an expedition to find the broken part of one tablet in a mountain of shattered clay fragments.
However, the tablet studied by Finkel is unique, the only one with precise instructions on how to build the ark – and the crucial detail that it should be circular. He believes the data on its exact dimensions, the two kinds of bitumen, and the precise amount of rope needed, are evidence not that the vessel once existed, but of a storyteller adding convincing details for an audience that knew all about boat-building.
The tablet was brought to him on a museum open day by Douglas Simmons, whose father, Leonard, brought it back to England in a tea-chest full of curios, after wartime service in the Middle East with the RAF.
When the Guardian originally broke the story of its discovery, Simmons said his father had once showed his treasures to some academics, and was bitterly disappointed when they were dismissed as rubbish. He suspects the tablet was either bought for pennies in a bazaar or literally picked up.
Finkel describes the clay tablet as "one of the most important human documents ever discovered", and his conclusions will send ripples into the world of creationism and among ark hunters, where many believe in the literal truth of the Bible account, and innumerable expeditions have been mounted to try to find the remains of the ark.
The clay tablet is going on display at the British Museum, loaned by Simmons, beside a tablet from the museum's collection with the earliest map of the world, as seen from ancient Babylon. The flood tablet helped explain details of the map, which shows islands beyond the river marking the edge of the known world, with the text on the back explaining that on one are the remains of the ark.
Finkel said that not only did the ark never exist, but ark hunters were looking in the wrong place – the map shows the ark in the direction of, but far beyond the mountain range later known as Ararat.

Ancient Mars May Have Been Habitable for Hundreds of Millions of Years.
Mars may have once been capable of supporting microbial life for hundreds of millions of years in the distant past, new findings from a long-lived Red Planet rover suggest.
NASA's Opportunity rover, which celebrates 10 years of Mars exploration on Friday (Jan. 24), has uncovered evidence that benign, nearly neutral-pH water flowed on the Red Planet around 4 billion years ago.
These results, reported today (Jan. 23) in the journal Science, complement the recent work of NASA's bigger, newer Curiosity rover, which discovered a potentially habitable lake and groundwater system in a different Martian locale dating from about 3.7 billion years ago. [Video: Mars Could Have Supported Life, NASA Finds]
"These [benign] water conditions existed over a long period of time," said Ray Arvidson, lead author of the new study and Opportunity deputy principal investigator.
Therefore, primitive organisms may have been able to survive on Mars for long stretches during a period when life was getting a foothold on Earth, said Arvidson, director of the Earth and Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis.
"That wouldn't be a surprise," he told SPACE.com. "Maybe not globally; [habitable environments] could have occurred here and there regionally. And it may not have been for the whole time continuously. We don't know."
The rover made the new discovery at an outcrop on the rim of Endeavour Crater, a 14-mile-wide (22 kilometers) hole in the ground that Opportunity reached in August 2011.
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted evidence of exposed, aluminum-rich clay minerals at a site along the rim called Matijevic Hill. Such clays generally form in the presence of benign, mildly acidic water, so the rover team commanded Opportunity to go check out the rock formation.
When Opportunity got there, the rover encountered the oldest rocks it has ever studied on Mars. Fine-grained, layered rocks in the Matijevic outcrop date from Mars' Noachian period, making them perhaps 4 billion years old, Arvidson said. (It's tough to date Mars rocks and formations definitively, so such numbers have large uncertainties associated with them, he stressed.)
These clay-enriched rocks are studded with BB-size "spherules" and cut by numerous fractures, through which liquid water flowed long ago, Arvidson said.
"The groundwaters that moved through those fractures were only mildly acidic, and mildly oxidizing to reducing," he said. "So, the earlier you go, the more clement the conditions were."
These ancient rocks predate the asteroid or comet impact that created Endeavour Crater, and they're covered in most places by younger material that bears the signature of hypersalty and much more acidic water — the signature, in other words, of a much less hospitable Mars.
Teaming up with Curiosity
Opportunity's new results take on deeper meaning when combined with the observations of the 1-tonCuriosity rover, which touched down on a different part of Mars in August 2012.
Curiosity was designed to extend and advance the discoveries of Spirit and Opportunity. It sports 10 different science instruments — a suite crafted specifically to determine if the Red Planet could ever have supported microbial life.
Last month, the Curiosity team announced that an area near the rover's landing site harbored a large, shallow and potentially habitable lake system during Mars' Hesperian era, which follows the Noachian in Red Planet chronology. This lake and its feeder streams likely existed about 3.7 billion years ago, or perhaps even a bit more recently, mission scientists said.
So researchers are starting to get a better idea of the Martian surface's window of habitability, Arvidson said. It appears that window might have been open — off and on, perhaps, and here and there — for hundreds of millions of years in the distant past.
Liquid water cannot exist for long periods on the surface of present-day Mars, whose atmosphere is just 1 percent as thick as that of Earth. That atmosphere was likely thicker long ago, if lakes and river systems were, indeed, stable for lengthy stretches, Arvidson said.
"One way to do it is to have massive impacts, and to have a [temporarily thicker] atmosphere," he said. "So it could be that you have multiple impacts over that extended period of time, and collectively they made for a sustained presence of water on the surface and in the shallow subsurface. But we don't know, at this point, with just two examples."

NSA virtual Skynet? Spy agencies task human time machines.
Human time machines allegedly tasked by secret NSA SIGINT program. U.K. psychic spy met with senior U.S. government officials from the Office of the Secretary of Defense after warning CIA prior to 9/11 attacks. 9/11 warning confirmed by former senior NSA official.
UPDATED with new information on the role played by Linton Wells II and Christopher Mellon at the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the confirmation of psychic 9/11 intelligence by former senior NSA official Thomas A. Drake.
Revised with new information on 24 June 2013
(STARstream Research for STARpod.us) — Several sources have come forward suggesting that the American National Security Agency continues to pursue “human time machines” within the secretive NSA Signals Intelligence division.
If the information provided by multiple sources is true, then the NSA has been experimenting with obtaining intelligence to affect the outcome of events before they occur.
Over the past two decades physicists — notably Dr. David Deutsch, a quantum computing expert from Oxford — and Seth Lloyd, of MIT — have explored the theoretical basis for time machines. In physics-speak, time machines are known as closed timelike curves, or CTCs.
Metaphysical questions of the possible use of human beings as virtual time machines have been addressed by Russian physicists. Michael Mensky, of the Lebedev Institute in Moscow, believes the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics can be extended to include the possibility of human minds accessing other times and spaces.
In the science fiction “Terminator” franchise, a vast self-aware computer system called “Skynet” attempts to protect its existence by sending machines back in time to effect the outcome of events.
Likewise, the use of “human time machines” by intelligence agencies is intended to change the course of future history.
The “Virtual Skynet” — a vast cosmic-scale Internet of awareness — has been explored in the past by American, Russian and Chinese intelligence services, among others.
In the United States, during the early 1990s, the Defense Intelligence Agency (then under current Director of National Intelligence James Clapper) ran a program called STAR GATE, based upon earlier research conducted by the CIA. Similar programs are known to have been conducted by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the Army and lesser known agencies, including the Missile Intelligence Agency.
The core idea behind the use of so-called paranormal phenomena is the idea that reality is not the hard material world of our expectations, but exists as a kind of virtual simulation — where other times and places can be considered as special cases of parallel universes.
The idea of a Multiverse — a quantum collective of all possible universes, where every possible event not forbidden by the laws of physics must take place — naturally leads to the idea of a virtual universe. Bridges between the various possible outcomes would be expected to obey laws of physics similar to those predicted for time machines.
One prediction of the physics of time machines says information from the future cannot be sent back into past before the time machine existed. This means that any virtual time machine connecting us to an alternative future must already exist in the here and now.
Some scientists have speculated about taking advantage of pre-existing extraterrestrial time machines, to obtain information about human destiny and prevent catastrophic events.
Is there any evidence that the NSA has explored the use of “human time machines” for intelligence collection?
Gerald K. Haines is the National Reconnaissance Office historian.
A footnote found in an article written by Haines for the CIA’s classified “Studies in Intelligence” confirms the existence of a rumored National Security Agency psychic research program.
The footnote about NSA use of so-called paranormal phenomena is found in the declassified CIA-published article called “CIA’s Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90: A Die-Hard Issue.” The article is available to read at the CIA’s website.
Haines writes, “CIA also maintained Intelligence Community coordination with other agencies regarding their work in parapsychology, psychic phenomena, and ‘remote viewing’ experiments. In general, the Agency took a conservative scientific view of these unconventional scientific issues.”
He then adds in the footnote, “There is a DIA Psychic Center and the NSA studies parapsychology, that branch of psychology that deals with the investigation of such psychic phenomena as clairvoyance, extrasensory perception, and telepathy.”
Previously, sources to STARstream Research, including one of the psychics who worked with the program following 9/11, identified the NSA as the successor to the now-declassified Defense Intelligence Agency program nicknamed STAR GATE.
The STAR GATE program made national headlines in 1995 after Ted Koppel of ABC News Nightline interviewed Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, an unidentified CIA official called “Norm” and Dr. Ed May, the scientist in charge of the DIA’s STAR GATE research. Dr. May’s Russian-born assistant, who had accompanied him to interview Russian researchers for the DIA, was later killed when she walked in front of train in 2001.
The footnote also mentions possible CIA involvement when extraterrestrial aliens arrive here on Earth: “The CIA reportedly is also a member of an Incident Response Team to investigate UFO landings, if one should occur.”
Curiously, one of the sources who provided information concerning the post-9/11 NSA psychic program (to investigative author Gus Russo) claimed that some of the operations to remote view foreign intelligence targets had been blocked by “an unknown extraterrestrial source.” This odd claim suggests the program involves more than psychic perceptions.
Following Russo’s revelation of the psychic program by his NSA source, a second independent source confirmed the existence of the program. The second source also mentioned involvement of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the home of the original STAR GATE program under Obama Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper.
The CIA article appears to confirm the alleged post-9/11 NSA program has its roots in earlier efforts. A review of numerous STAR GATE documents indicate NSA interest in paranormal phenomena, going back to the 1970s. Curiously, NSA appears to be redacted from later documents, suggesting the need to disassociate the agency from the STAR GATE program.
One improperly marked redaction clearly reveals the letters “NSA” under the blacked out section of the document.
Gus Russo’s NSA source told him that psychic remote viewing was considered a legitimate form of signals intelligence — suggesting the possible discovery of a transmission medium.
The search for a transmission medium for the human mind — analogous to radio waves for modern electronics — was a primary goal of the DIA STAR GATE program and had been tentatively identified by Russian researchers as “spin fields” or propagating space-time “torsion fields” connecting isolated minds across both space and time.
According to CIA author Haines, “In late 1993, after being pressured by UFOlogists for the release of additional CIA information on UFOs, DCI R. James Woolsey ordered another review of all Agency files on UFOs.”
In another footnote, Haines explains, “In September 1993 John Petersen [misspelled as 'Peterson' in the original], an acquaintance of Woolsey’s, first approached the DCI with a package of heavily sanitized CIA material on UFOs released to UFOlogist Stanton T. Friedman. Peterson and Friedman wanted to know the reasons for the redactions. Woolsey agreed to look into the matter.”
One STAR GATE document identifies Mr. Petersen as the person who instigated interest in STAR GATE psychic spy activities by senior members of the Department of Defense.
Within a year of Woolsey’s request for UFO information, a Congressional mandate was issued to transfer control of the DIA psychic programs to the CIA, where they were eventually declassified. A previous Congressional request included the requirement of cooperating with former Soviet scientists on paranormal related research, something the DIA apparently resisted.
A few years after declassification, the former Director of Central Intelligence Woolsey was associated with futurist John L. Petersen’s The Arlington Institute, as were several others including entrepreneur Joe Firmage, who was funding the kind of collaborative paranormal research previously requested by Congress.
Several sources have mentioned discussions at Petersen’s Arlington Institute concerning public disclosure of a covert extraterrestrial presence.
According to Catherine Austin Fitts, a former Assistant Secretary of Housing, the problem of the extraterrestrials living among us was discussed at The Arlington Institute.
Fitts claims that those present for the extraterrestrial discussions included Joe Firmage, the Undersecretary of the Navy, former Director of Central Intelligence James R. Woolsey, and several military, ex-military and government officials.
U.K. psychic spy Chris Robinson, who is known as the “dream detective” in the paranormal world, has come forward with new information concerning the role played by senior intelligence officials from the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Robinson says much of his archive of communications from that era was lost or stolen, but he recently discovered print copies of some of the lost emails, and shared a few with STARstream Research.
Following the 9/11 attacks against the World Trade Center, Robinson was contacted by retired U.S Colonel John B. Alexander. Over the next several years, Robinson was put in contact with numerous senior U.S. intelligence officials, including Linton Wells II, and Christopher Mellon at the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
During the 1990s DIA STAR GATE era, Wells sought to brief the Pentagon’s Andy Marshall on FENIKS (PHOENIX) devices, which may have been electromagnetic machines designed to induce paranormal states of consciousness, based upon sources and information contained in STAR GATE files. As a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Christopher Mellon was briefed on DIA’s paranormal efforts.
In addition to high-ranking officials from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Robinson worked on paranormal perception projects with Thomas A. Drake, the former senior NSA Signals Intelligence official who was later indicted under the Espionage Act for whistle-blowing on wasteful, ineffective and potentially illegal NSA monitoring programs. The espionage case against Drake was dropped by the government shortly before it was set to go to trial.

Easter Island's Statues Reveal Bodies Covered With Unknown Ancient Petroglyphs.
Standing some 2,000 miles west of Chile, on the Easter Island, 887 mysterious giant statues have intrigued scientists and the public for years.
For a long time it was believed that the massive statutes consisted of just the heads.
However, in October 2011, when the Easter Island Statue Project began its Season V expedition, scientists could reveal remarkable photos showing that the bodies of the statues go far deeper underground than just about anyone had imagined.
Project director Jo Anne Van Tilburg said: "Our EISP excavations recently exposed the torsos of two 7m tall statues.
The excavation team also found about 800 grams of natural red pigment — nearly two pounds — in the burial hole, along with a human burial. Van Tilburg believes the pigment was used to paint the statues, just as the Rapa Nui used pigment to paint their bodies for certain ceremonies.
The unusually large amount of pigment found indicates that it might have been used by a priest or chief, perhaps as part of mortuary practice, she said. Human bones were found throughout the dig, indicating that people buried their dead around the statues.

The statutes on Easter Island have bodies covered with ancient undeciphered petroglyphs.
"We found a round, deep post hole into which the Rapa Nui had inserted a tree trunk," she said. Van Tilburg said ropes were attached to the tree trunk and to the partially carved statue. "We found a rope guide that was actually carved into the bedrock near the statue." The Rapa Nui then used the tree trunk to raise the statue upright. Before the statue was upright, they carved its front. Once it stood erect, they finished the back, Van Tilburg explained. The excavation team also found about 800 grams of natural red pigment — nearly two pounds — in the burial hole, along with a human burial. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of visitors to the island have been astonished to see that, indeed, Easter Island statues have bodies!
More important, however, we discovered a great deal about the Rapa Nui techniques of ancient engineering."
Among their discoveries, the team discovered:
The team also discovered that ceremonies were certainly associated with the statues.
On the project website, Van Tilburg said: "We found large quantities of red, some of which may have been used to paint the statues.
Finally, and perhaps most poignantly, we found in the pavement under one statue a single stone carved with a crescent symbol said to represent a canoe, or vaka.
The backs of both statues are covered with petroglyphs, many of which are also vaka.
A direct connection between the vaka symbol and the identity of the artist or group owning the statue is strongly suggested."
Still, many of these ancient petroglyphs remain undeciphered and the history of one of the most remote islands in the world is now even more mysterious than ever.
Among their discoveries, the team discovered:
- · The dirt and detritus partially burying the statues was washed down from above and not deliberatelyplaced there to bury, protect, or support the statues
- · The statues were erected in place and stand on stone pavements
- · Post holes were cut into bedrock to support upright tree trunks
- · Rope guides were cut into bedrock around the post holes
- · Posts, ropes, stones, and different types of stone tools were all used to carve and raise the statues upright
The team also discovered that ceremonies were certainly associated with the statues.

The backs of both statues are covered with petroglyphs, many of which are also vaka.
A direct connection between the vaka symbol and the identity of the artist or group owning the statue is strongly suggested."

US Congress has close encounter over extraterrestrial life.
Witnesses from Nasa and MIT suggest to House committee that scientists may be on verge of breakthrough in search for aliens.
The search for extraterrestrial life crosses every boundary. It has surpassed the limit of where humans can travel and tested the limits of what we can see. The quest must pass through time as well as space.

Also: Congress.
A House committee convened on Wednesday to take up an abiding mystery of the universe: are we Earthlings alone? After about 90 minutes of testimony, committee chair Lamar Smith of Texas gaveled the hearing to an inconclusive close.
It was not, however, a fruitless outing. In impassioned testimony, witnesses from Nasa, MIT and the Library of Congress described a crossroads in the search for life out there and suggested scientists may be on the verge of a breakthrough.
"This is the first time in human history we have the technological reach to cross the threshold," said Dr Sara Seager, an MIT professor and 2013 MacArthur "genius grant" recipient. Her work focuses on the detection of "biosignature" gases on distant planets, large volumes of which might indicate life, whether intelligent life or single-cell bacteria.
Seager testified that the James Webb space telescope, scheduled for launch in 2018, and other advances are changing the search for alien life forms. "If life really is everywhere, we actually have a shot at it," she said.
Nasa announced last month that its Kepler mission had discovered 3,500 potential planets in the Milky Way galaxy, including 647 thought to be the right distance from stars to support inhabitants. The Hubble space telescope has detected water in the atmospheres of five planets outside the solar system, according to two studies released this week.
"The chance is very high" of life elsewhere in the universe, Seager said. "The question is: is there life near here, in our neighborhood of stars? We think the chances are good."
The witnesses said that sustained funding was needed for scientific research in general and space research in particular. The latest White House budget calls for $17.7bn for Nasa, a slight decrease from 2012 after deeper cuts in the last decade.
"I know that funding is tough, but it's the best thing that you can do," said Dr Mary Voytek, senior scientist for astrobiology at Nasa.
"You've pretty much indicated [the discovery of] life on other planets is inevitable," observed Bill Posey, Republican of Florida. "It's just a matter of time and funding."

Conditions for Life on Mars Backed by Second NASA Finding.
Samples from the rim of a 3.7 billion year old crater on Mars are the earliest evidence of water activity yet discovered, confirming previous findings that conditions existed on the now-rocky planet for life formation.
A group of rocks called the Matijevic formation suggested mild conditions on Mars billions of years ago, according to a finding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Opportunity rover, which touched down on the planet in 2004. The discovery was published today in the journal Science.
The finding adds to the more-recent Curiosity mission, which also found evidence of ancient habitability 3.5 billion years ago. While that doesn’t mean life actually formed on Mars, it gives scientists more hope, said Raymond Arvidson, the study author and head of NASA’s Planetary Data System Geosciences Node.
“The older you go in geologic time, the wetter it was on the surface, and the more evidence for flowing water and ground water, under conditions that are more earth-like,” said Arvidson, who also is a professor at Washington University at St. Louis.
Later in Mars’s history, the ground water was more acidic and salty, making it difficult for even the most extreme known bacteria to live, Arvidson said in a telephone interview.
The discovery was made on Endeavor, an ancient impact crater from the first period of geologic time, Arvidson said. It has since been heavily eroded by water. The rover found a clay mineral that forms in water under mildly acidic conditions. Though Endeavor is old, the Matijevic formation is even older, and is made of rocks that were sitting on Mars when the asteroid or comet that created the crater hit.
Common Clay
The researchers also found a kind of clay that commonly forms on earth when water flows through fractures in the rock. That suggests a lot of mild groundwater leeched material from the rocks, Arvidson said.
It isn’t clear that the conditions were right to preserve any carbon, which can be a signature of life. If Curiosity, the rover that landed on Mars in 2012, were to drive to the Matijevic formation and sample it, that may aid in determining whether any carbon was there.
The younger rover is now headed toward Mt. Sharp, which is composed of about 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) of layered sedimentary rock, which Arvidson described as “a geological strip chart recorder” of Mars’s history.
“This is way beyond saying we have water on Mars,” he said. “This is trying to get to past chemical conditions of the water, and say something about habitability, and directing future missions to the juiciest havens.”
