This Prehistoric Underground Temple Hides the Unexplained Mystery of Elongated Skulls

The only known prehistoric underground temple worldwide is located in Malta. Dating back to 5.000 B.C, “Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni” or simply “Hypogeum”, from the Greek word hypo (under) and gaia (mother earth) is an underground construction, which consists of interconnecting chambers in three levels. 

Hypogeum, carved into 2.000 tons of stone, was discovered in 1902 by construction workers while working on the foundations of a building. The first excavator of this underground construction was Fr Emmanuel Magri. 

He worked there between 1904 and 1906, but his notes were lost after his death in Tunisia. Magri was succeeded by Sir Themistocles Zammit until 1911. Archaeologists believe Hypogeum was used until 2500 B.C.

Although its original purpose is unknown, they are sure that it was used as a burial place. Further excavation of Hypogeum revealed the first and oldest level, which consists of a large hollow with burial chambers on its sides. Its main entrance used to be on the surface.

A doorway leads to the second level, filled with impressive carved stones in different shapes, pentagons and floral patterns in red ochre. 

The deepest level consists of the “Main Room” and other rooms: the “Decorated room”(a richly decorated chamber), the “Snake Pit”(used for either keeping snakes or collecting alms), the “Holy of Holies”, and the “Oracle Room”. Researchers have made extensive studies on the acoustic properties of the last chamber. 

Any sound made in this room is heard all throughout Hypogeum and can affect human emotions. But there is a lot more in this superb prehistoric structure.

When it was discovered, more than 7.000 skeletons were found in the chambers near the entrance. The photos of Dr Anton Mifsud and his colleague Dr Charles Savona Ventura testify their existence. 

Further examination of the skulls showed that, due to peculiar abnormalities, they were elongated, and one lacked the Fossa median.

There was also found a small statue of a sleeping goddess, with a snake inscription on it.

  
Research suggests that these skulls belonged to people with a natural genetic tendency for elongated skulls. 

Until 1985, a number of these strange, lengthened skulls were exposed in the Archaeological Museum in Valletta. Today, there are only 7 skulls. The rest of them have disappeared, along with the 7.000 from Hypogeum and haven’t been recovered since then. Hypogeum first opened to visitors in 1908. 

Since then, hundreds of people keep visiting it every year. Although only small groups of visitors are allowed in it, in order to maintain temperature and humidity at required levels, booking a Hypogeum tour and seeing the past through the eyes of our ancestors looks like an overwhelming experience. 

This place is full of inexplicable mysteries that remain unsolved, which makes it even more fascinating and attractive to the visitors.

"It was while enjoying a lunch to discuss an investigation that Pembrokeshire Beyond members G L Davies and Keryn Williams noticed something very odd on the wall of the Food at Williams restaurant on the main street in Pembroke.

The walls adorned with pictures of Pembroke through out the ages had one peculiar image. The photograph appears to have the shadowy figure barely visible on the left hand side."

But who or what is the behind the transparent and mysterious figure?

A copy was taken and presented to a local photography expert. He was most intrigued. As a local business man he asked for his identity to be kept private but did have these words for us.

” I don’t think it is or was intended as long-exposure photography or time-exposure photography. I would have to have to look more in depth at the camera’s used at the time. The most intriguing part for me is the area around the figure which does not seem to be affected at all. If this picture is say ,100 years old or more then it would have been highly unlikely that someone would have walked or ran through the picture as it would have been a big deal to set up and take the photograph back in those days.”

Pembrokeshire Beyond  member and Historian Richard Clayton is currently investigating the picture and looking for a clue which will identify the date and possibly the photographer and the camera used. He had this comment ” The records show that many photographs were taken between 1897 and 1901 of Pembroke and I would say based on the fashions depicted in the image that it is most probably late 19th century to very early 20th century. I am currently looking into other pictures taken during this time to see if there are any other similar anomalies.”

Pembrokeshire Beyond  investigator Keryn Williams believes she may have the answer. ” This could be a case of pareidolia. It may be that an alignment of different objects from the background has been captured in the photograph and the mind is creating an image of a figure. The legs are an intriguing aspect though. This picture is compelling and intriguing and needs further investigation.”

What is the Ankh symbol doing in Mexico?

Calixtlahuaca, present day Toluca has one of the most mysterious objects discovered in Mexico. The Monument number 4, Cross Altar or Tzompantli share an incredible similarity to the Ankh cross in ancient Egypt.

The ankh also known as key of life was the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic character that read “life”. It actually represents  the concept of eternal life, which is according to historians the general meaning of the symbol. It is one of the most important ancient Egyptian symbols yet one of the most mysterious ones because the origin of the symbol remains a mystery to Egyptologists even today and not a single hypothesis has been fully accepted. The symbol appears frequently in Egyptian tomb paintings and other art, often at the fingertips of a god or goddess in images that represent the deities of the afterlife. A symbol similar to the ankh appears frequently in Minoan and Mycenaean sites and it frequently appeared in coins from ancient Cyprus and Asia Minor and it is also used to represent the planet Venus and the metal copper.

But what is the Ankh symbol doing in Mexico? The archaeological site of Calixtlahuaca is located at about 2,500 meters and there are several monuments present at the site. Out of these structures we pick out the Tzompantli structure. A Tzompantli s a type of wooden rack or palisade documented in several Mesoamerican civilizations. It was used for the public display of human skulls, typically  of war captives or other sacrificial victims. It is a scaffold-like construction of poles on which heads and skulls were placed after holes had been made in them. – wikipedia

The Tzompantli present at Calixtlahuaca is a cross altar decorated with skulls, it had skulls carved in stone embedded around the structure. Originally had more than ten, today there are only two original and the replica of a third. but what makes this construction so mysterious is that it resembles the Egyptian Symbol Ankh.

We know that the Egyptian civilization and the Aztec civilization where similar in many ways both civilizations built pyramids, used solar symbolism, and both believed in life after death. the fact that these two ancient civilizations apparently share the same symbolism is something that archaeologists will probably look better into. The similarity between some structures found at Calixtlahuaca when compared to some symbols and structures from Egypt is quite interesting.

Both of these cultures had a similar use of the “Tau” cross. The Ancient Egyptian Ankh was a “Tau” cross that has a loop on top of it. Ancient Aztecs and Mayas used a similar symbolism in their cross, that apparently comes from the “Tau” cross without the loop that Ancient Egyptians used. This is why the “Ankh cross found in Mexico” is really interesting. Why would the Aztecs deliberately deviate from their conventional use of the “Tau” cross and modify it like they did in Calixtlahuaca by adding a loop, just like the Egyptians did. to the Egyptians the Ankh symbol was a very important glyph that was connected to the afterlife. The ancient Egyptians were extremely spiritual and they firmly believed that a person continues to live in the afterlife. That is why the Ankh cross was so important to them. In Central America we have a similar story when we talk about the Mayas and Aztecs as they believed that a person would continue to live in the afterlife.

The TAU cross was inscribed on the forehead of every person admitted into the Mysteries of Mithras. When a king was initiated into the Egyptian Mysteries, the TAU was placed against his lips. It was tattooed upon the bodies of the candidates in some of the American Indian Mysteries. To the Qabbalist, the TAU stood for heaven and the Pythagorean tetractys. There are many monuments at Calixtlahuaca that have not been excavated yet, there is plenty of work to be done on the site and archaeologists are hoping to uncover more information about this ancient complex and their inhabitants.

There was this little cutie who appeared to be on the brink of attack by a demon hand, and then there was the spirit who crept up in this Snapchat selfie. But of all the chilling (and yes, sometimes silly) images we've come across, this picture is quite possibly the most goose bump-inducing.

Anastassia Perets was flipping through an old family album when she stumbled across a photo of herself taken when she was four years old (she's the one in the spunky red pants). In the background, another child appears to be opening a door. Seems normal enough. But there was no little girl there—well, not living at least.

Anastassia told us, "I thought it was a mirror or something but further observation showed me that was not so. I got so freaked out I started screaming and crying and the neighbors thought someone must have broken in or something."

When Anastassia later asked her parents about the photo, which was taken in their home, they said they'd never seen the child before and confirmed that she was definitely a ghost.

Anastassia was later told by a psychic, without being prompted, that the spirit of a young girl was following her. How's that for eerie?

Iron cup discovered inside a piece of Coal that is millions years old

It’s a perfect piece of metal and it was discovered in 1912 in a mine in Wilburton, Oklahoma, its discoverer was Frank J. Kennard and according to him, it was found within a block of coal. But what makes this cup so mysterious? Well, as many other objects found across the world, the age of the artifact has caused debate.

Kennard, who was in 1948 a Benton Co worker, said: “While I was working in the Municipal Electric Plant in Thomas, Oklahoma in 1912, I came upon a solid chunk of coal which was too large to use. I broke it with a sledge hammer. This iron pot fell from the centre leaving the impression mould of the pot in the piece of coal. Jim Stall (an employee of the company) witnessed the breaking of the coal, and saw the pot fall out. I traced the source of the coal, and found that it came from the Wilburton, Oklahoma, Mines.”

The coal that originated from the mines of Wilburton, Oklahoma, is estimated to be around 300 million years old. This is where the story ignites and goes cold according to some.

Regrettably, the only evidence comes from the testimony of a person and that does not have much scientific rigor according to skeptics, besides, this object vanished like many others who had a similar story, and similar age and apparently shared the same faith. If the object was found today, it would provide much more insight into the discovery, the origin of the item, who created it and what was the purpose, but most importantly it would shed light on its true age.

There is the theory regarding how an object like that might have ended up inside the coal, as the mines are filled with puddles of saturated water, eventually the water hardens and the object might have ended up inside the piece of coal. As noted by Mark Isaac: “The cup appears to be cast iron, and cast iron technology began in the eighteenth century. Its design is much like pots used to hold molten metals and may have been used by a tinsmith, tinker, or person casting bullets.”

The usual problems are seen in the discovery of this item, anecdotal evidence is basically the only thing we have, yet that does not explain how the artifact ended up embedded in the coal which is around 300 million years old. So as skeptics would say, no matter how certain Frank Kennard might have been at the time of his discovery, skeptics will provide dozens of alternative explanations regarding the item and how it ended up inside the coal. Not only for this item, but for many other items with similar age.

Of course, this might as well be a joke, but if it were a joke, wouldn’t it be already proven to be just that, a joke? Ancient alien theorist have a high regard when it comes to items like this, they are both mysterious, and challenge the typical views of history and archaeology. It seems that every time one of these items pops up, they are seen by archaeology and mainstream history as potential “enemies” since their true origin and age might challenge the conventional way, researchers look at history and civilization.
