The Mysterious Monolithe On Mars

An image of what appears to be a mysterious rocky monument on Mars has excited space junkies around the world. The 'monolith', was snapped from 165 miles away using a special high resolution camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

After being published on the website Lunar Explorer Italia, it set tongues wagging with space buffs questioning whether there was once life on the Red Planet.

But scientists at the University of Arizona, who captured the original image, reckon it's just an unremarkable boulder, which could measure up to five meters across.

Yisrael Spinoza, a spokesman for the HiRISE department of the university's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, gave Mail Online the original image so readers can make up their own minds.

He said:
'It would be unwise to refer to it as a "monolith" or "structure" because that implies something artificial, like it was put there by someone for example.

'In reality it's more likely that this boulder has been created by breaking away from the bedrock to create a rectangular-shaped feature.'
The image seems to resemble the black monolith that appears during key moments of man's evolution in the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The original image, taken last July, was published again this week on the University of Arizona's HiRISE website on the 'spotlight' page which seems to have led to the renewed interest.
'Is it possible that there used to be an ancient civilization on Mars?' former Montreal radio presenter David Tyler asked on his blog. 'Is it possible that NASA already knows the answer? Could this be the final straw for disclosure?'

But speaking about the satellite picture scientist Alfred McEwen, the principal investigator from the University of Arizona's HiRISE department, said:
'There are lots of rectangular boulders on Earth and Mars and other planets.

'Layering from rock deposition combined with tectonic fractures creates right-angle planes of weakness such that rectangular blocks tend to weather out and separate from the bedrock.'

Fuel was added to the flames after Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, alluded to a similar monolith detected on Mars' moon Phobos.

Speaking on a U.S. cable television channel last week he said:
'We should visit the moons of Mars.

'There's a monolith there - a very unusual structure on this little potato shaped object that goes around Mars once every seven hours.
'When people find out about that they are going to say, "Who put that there? Who put that there?" Well the universe put it there, or if you choose God put it there.'
In 2007 the Canadian Space Agency funded a study for an unmanned mission to Phobos known as PRIME (Phobos Reconnaissance and International Mars Exploration).

The building-sized monolith is the main proposed landing site but not because scientists suspect UFO activity. They believe the object is a boulder exposed relatively recently in an otherwise featureless area of the asteroid-like moon.

PRIME investigator Dr Alan Hildebrand said it could answer questions about the moon's composition and history.
'If we can get to that object, we likely don’t need to go anywhere else,' he told his science team.

Dropping in on Turkmenistan's 'door to hell'

The origin of Turkmenistan's Darvaza Crater – nicknamed the "door to hell" – is disputed, but the theory most widely accepted involves a Soviet expedition to explore for gas.
A Turkmen geologist claims the borehole was set alight in 1971 after fears it was emitting poisonous gases. It has now been burning for 40 years.
The crater, which is 69 metres wide and 30 metres deep, is located in a natural gas field in Ahal Province in Turkmenistan, which has the sixth largest reserves in the world.
George Kourounis, a Canadian explorer, became the first person known to have ventured into the pit last year, though footage of his expedition first aired this week on National Geographic, which partly funded the expedition. The aim was to collect soil samples from the bottom of the pit, to try to establish whether life can exist in such a harsh environment.

Guam Undersea Mystery

The Guam Mystery is Unique.

They are images taken from Google Earth in the area around Saipan that appear the show some type of large formation, perhaps roads, or something similar beneath the surface of the water. I've spent some time viewing them on Google Earth, and they are indeed there, and seem to be quite plentiful in the area.

Does anyone know what they are, or has anyone come across these "roads" before? They are rather interesting due to their size and "unnatural" look.

Take a look at this Google Earth images.

The Sunken City of Cuba - Officials Ignored it for 10 Years Because it's 'Out of Time and Out of Place'

Just over a decade ago, a team of explorers were working on an exploration and survey mission off the western coast of Cuba when their sonar equipment picked up a perplexing series of stone structures lying some 650 metres below the surface.

The structures appeared completely analogous against the barren ‘desert’ of the ocean floor and seemed to show symmetrically organized stones reminiscent of an urban development.

A media flurry soon ensued with news sites sporting headlines such as ‘Atlantis Discovered in Cuba’ and ‘Lost City of the Caribbean Found’.

However, the finding also attracted the attention of the government, national museum, and national geographic, who all made promises to investigate the strange sonar images. Now, ten years on, the story has disappeared into obscurity.

What ever happened to the sunken ‘ruins’ of Cuba? Were they ever fully investigated? And why has the media fallen silent on this unusual discovery?

A Mexican Bridal Shop Mannequin Looks Just Like A Preserved Human Corpse.

In the middle of Chihuahua, Mexico, there is a bridal shop that is quite famous. However, it’s not famous because of the dresses. It’s the store mannequins that keep them on the map.
That’s because, for the past 75 years, a startlingly lifelike mannequin stood in the window. That Mexican bridal shop mannequin puzzled locals. According to local legends, the mannequin is actually the preserved daughter of the shop’s former owner.
Disturbing, but is it true? No one knows for sure. Take a look at these pictures and decide for yourself. The detail you’ll be able to see on this corpse bride is incredible.

Ghost of Martyred Saint Captured on Video Inside St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church

Plunkett was ordained a priest in 1654 around the time the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland had defeated the Roman Catholic cause making the public practice of Roman Catholicism illegal. As a result, Roman Catholic clergy were executed and Plunkett was forced to stay in Rome, unable to return to his Irish home. After the English Restoration of 1660, Plunkett was finally able to return to Ireland (in 1670) where he set about reorganizing the ravaged Roman Church. Only three years into rebuilding the Irish churches, the Test Acts were passed making anyone who refused to adhere to the “official church of England” an outlaw. Refusing the government’s edict, Plunkett went into hiding, travelling throughout the country in disguise.
Plunkett was eventually captured and moved to Newgate Prison in London where he awaited trial. His trial, described by historians as “a travesty of justice”, was held in Westminster Hall in London where an all-protestant jury ruled that Plunkett was “promoting the Catholic faith” and found him guilty of high treason in June 1681. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered (beheaded, body cut into four pieces) at Tyburn on July 1, 1681. He was the last Roman Catholic martyr to die in England.
Plunkett’s body parts were buried in various places (major body parts are located Downside Abbey, England) while his head eventually found a resting place in Saint Peter’s Church in Drogheda, Ireland. The Relic of St. Oliver’s Head now stands in an impressive new shrine inside the church. In a glass cabinet nearby, is the door from the cell of Newgate Prison, London – the cell Plunkett occupied as a condemned man for the last few weeks of his life. It was behind this cell door that Plunkett wrote many notable letters and his last speech, which he delivered from the gallows at Tyburn and is famous for showing forgiveness to all those who had anything to do with his death.
The cell door from the prison cell where Saint Oliver Plunkett was held during his trial and executionIt was while Vikki Bramshaw was filming the cell door with her mobile phone that the saint’s head flickered into view. She did not notice the head (as you can tell from the audio – there is no surprise in her voice) until she viewed the video after she returned home.
Bramshaw says she has ruled out a reflection on the display case glass.
“I watched it again and again to see if it was a reflection, but there are other things reflected in the glass, and they’re not moving, and this does. I consider myself quite a down-to-earth person, and am keeping an open mind on what it might be.”
This is the first reported instance of the saint’s ghostly spirit appearing in the church and Bramshaw has said she has no idea why he would have chosen her to make his first appearance. It may be worthy to note that Bramshaw is an established author of many books on witchcraft, including her latest, Craft of the Wise: A Practical Guide to Paganism and Witchcraft and runs her own coven on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire. Given their conflicts of interest, possibly there *was* reason behind Plunkett’s decision to make his first appearance before her.
Check out the video below which shows the head of Saint Oliver Plunkett appearing briefly through the window of the prison door.  We’ve post processed key parts to provide slow-motion zooms of key areas in the video.
